Studying pets in the context of their own home has many benefits in terms of behaviour, but designing experiments can be hard as there is typically only one animal that you can test.

Single case studies are special cases of experiment where the researcher wants to compare the same subject over a variety of different phases and compare these to a baseline phase. Typical designs include (but are not limited to) single-case phase designs such as:

AB
ABA
ABAB

where 'A' is baseline and 'B' is treatment x.

These types of design are very useful as the allow you to return to baseline to ensure that any effects of treatment are not due to uncontrolled factors.
